iCloud for Windows now has a passwords app: Here’s how it works

A first: WIndows users now have a separate app for the iCloud keychain. This allows you to easily and quickly manage saved passwords.

Read on after the ad.

Windows has new iCloud app

After you download or update iCloud for Windows, the new app will appear in the Windows start menu. When you are then logged in with your Apple ID, you can view and manage iCloud passwords.

In Windows it was already possible to use the passwords from your iCloud keychain through a browser extension (in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge). It was just not yet possible to manage the passwords.

How the app works

This is possible with the ‘stand-alone’ iCloud app for Windows. Please note that the passwords you remove or change from the list are also immediately updated in your iCloud Keychain. This means that the passwords will also be changed on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.

Other than that, the app works as you would expect. You can view all your passwords, change current passwords, add or remove new codes.

Apple apps on Windows

The iCloud for Windows app is free to download from the Windows Store. The new passwords app amplifies other Apple apps already available for Windows. For example, consider iCloud Drive in Windows Explorer and the ability to sync Safari bookmarks in other browsers.

It is not yet certain whether the new features of iCloud Plus will also come to iCloud for Windows. With this function you can surf the internet a lot more anonymously. For example, it is possible to create anonymous e-mail addresses and Private Relay is, as it were, a VPN service from Apple. Your internet traffic is redirected and encrypted so that you can surf a lot more anonymously.
