Mexico is building a sustainable building complex with vertical forests

The way we live will change permanently over the next few decades. The climate balance of existing buildings must be improved, while at the same time we should always think of nature when we put new buildings in the landscape.

A new building complex called “Living in the Noom” in Mexico is taking this route. The somewhat luxurious design should be based on the three pillars of wellness, sustainability and flexibility. The design should reduce consumption by artificial lighting or air conditioning by 85 percent.

On four floors there is space for apartments with a size of up to 120 square meters, on the top floor there is a communal area that is covered on the one hand with solar panels and on the other hand also invites you to garden.

The facade is built with bamboo struts and a vertical forest, 70 percent of the property area is greened, just 30 percent built on. But that’s not all: For example, the recycling of rainwater should reduce the water requirement, and certain areas are reserved for composting.

The interior furnishings should also consist primarily of high-quality materials (Image: YD)

The sustainable living principle should bring many advantages. The greening should result in less heat and at the same time the air quality should be significantly improved. People and their health should benefit from home-grown food.

Own opinion:

With “Living in the Noom” the developers are showing some courage. At the moment, sustainable buildings are usually even more expensive, but at the same time, the need is not really available among the general population. Because this is where the project reaches its limits. On the one hand, there is comparatively few people in the total area, and only people with a high income should be able to rent here. And what good is sustainability if it can only be achieved by the wealthy?
