Google has released a new Drive app for the Mac. At the same time, the company will soon pull the plug on the two versions currently in circulation. In this article we will update you about the changes.

New: Google Drive for Mac

In summary, the new Google Drive app should be simpler and easier to work with than the current solutions. At the base – being able to sync files via the cloud – nothing changes.

1. One storage place

Convenience serves people. That’s how they think about it at Google. In the new Drive app, you can therefore view and sync storage not only from Google, but also from external sources such as hard drives. That way you have a better overview of all the different storage methods you have.

2. No more distinction

The previously separate programs for consumer and business users are now being merged. This is useful for people who save both private and business with Google Drive, because everything is now in one app.

3. Access your files anywhere

The new Google Drive app for Mac tries to narrow the difference between physical storage (from your computer) and cloud storage. That’s why files you store in the cloud are “mirrored” to your Mac.

This way you can ‘just’ open and use the files on your computer and you don’t have to think about manual synchronization. Also updating and updating files happens in the background.

4. Quick update

The new Google Drive app for Mac will roll out in the coming weeks. Are you currently using Google’s Backup and Sync feature? Then you will automatically receive a message with the request to upgrade.

Business Drive users will be requested to update from August 18. Google will pull the plug on Backup and Sync in September this year. From then on you can no longer sync files via the Mac app.

Alternative to Google Drive

Drive is Google’s cloud storage, but more roads lead to Rome. As an Apple website, we are therefore obliged to name iCloud. Apple’s cloud storage basically does the same as Google Drive, but will get a major upgrade this fall.

Then iCloud Plus comes out. The biggest addition is Private Relay. This allows you to surf the internet anonymously, provided you use Apple’s own Safari browser. In the article below we indicate whether iCloud Plus is a smart deal.
