Instagram is testing the ability to create posts from your computer

Many use the Instagram social network via a computer, but Facebook has for many years focused on its mobile application and has neglected the computer version. Now, however, it finally adds a feature that allows these users to publish Instagram posts from their computer. Some Twitter users have noticed that a beta version of the feature was released on Thursday, and Instagram has confirmed this for TechCrunch.

Instagram launches the ability to add posts from your computer to selected users

“We know a lot of people use Instagram from their computer,” an Instagram spokesman said. “To improve their user experience, we’re now testing the ability to create posts on the main channel using a browser on your computer.”

This feature is currently only available to select users. You can easily find out if you are one of them. Open Instagram in your browser and you should see a new “plus” icon in the top right of the icon bar. However, the feature allows you to post only on the main channel and does not allow you to add stories, Reels or IGTV videos.

Why does Instagram add this option now?

The desktop version of Instagram was still a bit worse than the mobile version. Instagram added the ability to view stories on your computer until 2017, and at the end of last year also added the ability to send private messages. However, during the pandemic, the company saw an increase in the number of users who preferred to visit the social network from a computer rather than a smartphone.

However, it is not known why Instagram took so long to add this desired feature. One theory is that if the web version were as good as the mobile application, users would stop using it. However, the company’s data analyst found the exact opposite when launching the ability to send private messages over a computer.

“We found no evidence that the web version of Instagram hurts our mobile apps. On the contrary, users who use both interfaces spend more time on the social network than users who use only one interface. ”
