Playdate: a charging station-alarm clock, original games, and the pre-release soon!
The studio Panic (publisher of the excellent Firewatch and Untitled Goose Game) therefore presented its mini Playdate console in more detail during a stream full of surprises. Totally unexpected, the Playdate Stereo Dock, a charging dock for the console that also serves as a connected stereo speaker and clock radio, and can even accommodate a pretty all yellow pen. Also interesting are the “surprise” games that will automatically arrive in the Playdate each week.
The presentation of the launch titles was also reassuring (very nice surf game, and especially full of fairly fresh concepts) and of course, the small crank often plays an important role in the gameplay. Fans of really different indie titles, this console is undoubtedly made for you. Pretty, well finished, an endearing and original concept, equally original games, the Playdate already seems to escape the syndrome of all rotten alternative consoles (Ouya, who said Ouya?), And it is already not so bad …
There remains the question of price, the annoying question. Because at 179 dollars the console-concept (or even 199 dollars with its protective bag), not even to mention the price of the dock (still not specified), it starts to make a lot, especially since it is a question here of tariffs in dollars exclusive of taxes, thus without counting the VAT and undoubtedly the extension for the shipping costs. This high price could curb the enthusiasm of the curious, which is undoubtedly a shame for a console so original and prepared in every detail. The Playdate (with 24 onboard games) will be up for pre-order during the month of July. The first deliveries will begin before the end of the year.
