Rumor: Apple OLED screens only in 2022
DigiTimes is a well-known source when it comes to Apple rumors, but it’s not always right. It is therefore wise to take a closer look. The website does not indicate which iPad model will get an OLED screen first, but given the screen size, it may be the iPad Air.
The rumor that Apple will not release an iPad with an OLED screen until next year at the earliest, coincides with the statements of Apple analysts from the British bank Barclays. According to them, an iPad Pro with a mini LED screen is planned for this year, a different screen type.
‘Apple opts for OLED and mini LED’
According to MacRumors it is possible that Apple will eventually opt for a mix between the two display technologies – depending on the product price. This would mean that only the most expensive iPad and MacBook models get an OLED screen.
Since OLED screens are expensive to produce, it is not surprising that Apple is also looking at other screen options. For example, it has long been rumored that Apple will announce iPads and MacBooks with mini-LED screens this year.
Mini LED screens have many of the same advantages of OLED screens. For example, the black levels are deeper and the colors brighter than on a normal LCD screen. Mini-LED does seem to be cheaper in terms of production.
Apple is slowly switching to OLED screens
Apple is slowly increasing the number of OLED screens since the first Apple Watch in 2015. The iPhone got the highly anticipated screen tech in 2017, with the arrival of the iPhone X.
Where the screens were only reserved for the most expensive model at the time, the standard iPhone 12 has now also embraced screen technology. The rumors about iPads and MacBooks with OLED screens are therefore not surprising.
