MacBook Pro gets battery repair program
Apple writes on its website that a “very small number” of customers suffer from these battery problems. These are 13 and 15 inch MacBook Pro laptops that were made in 2016 and 2017. The affected computers cannot charge more than 1 percent. In practice, these laptops fail immediately as soon as you remove the charging cable.
The problems occur with the models below:
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
- MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)
- MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017)
From the Apple menu, tap About This Mac to check your model. For affected models, the settings indicate that battery maintenance is required.
Is your laptop suffering from the battery problem?
You can check how your laptop is doing by going to ‘System Preferences’ in the Apple menu. Select Battery, then press Battery again in the sidebar. Here you will find the heading ‘Battery condition’, click on it. These directions are for macOS 11 (Big Sur), the latest Mac software.
Are you running macOS Catalina, or an earlier software version on your MacBook Pro? Then hold down the Option key and press the battery symbol in the menu bar to display the Battery health menu.
If it says ‘Maintenance recommended’ here, your laptop may be covered by the terms of the repair program. If it says ‘Normal’ here, your laptop battery is not affected by the specific problem.
