Every month a mother talks about the moment in motherhood when things went completely wrong.
Marieke (38), mother of Jasmijn (3):
“As a pedagogical employee in childcare I am used to a lot, but a few years ago I experienced something so funny and at the same time embarrassing that I have never forgotten the incident.
At the nursery where I worked at the time, we had a room with a number of children’s toilets and a large changing table. During a changing round, we always took a small group to that room – a few children for potty training and a few for a diaper change. I was changing a baby on the changing table, a colleague helped two boys of about three years old to learn how to pee in the toilet.

Bare buttocks
Children of this age find it very interesting to see someone in his or her bare buttocks. But beyond ‘what kind of pee do you have?’ that is usually not the case. This time, however, we got to hear a completely different conversation. The boys – let’s call them Sem and Jonas – sat next to each other on the toilet. Shem proudly said: ‘I have a penis’. Jonas agreed: ‘Me too’.
Sem continued: ‘My daddy also has a penis.’ Jonas nodded, “Yes, my dad too.” It was now Sem’s turn again: ‘My mom has no penis.’ But then Jonas had a huge surprise: his mom did! Sam looked very surprised. A mom with a dick?! ‘Yes,’ said Jonas cheerfully, ‘it’s in the cupboard by the bed.’
Face in the fold
You could sweep up my colleague and me, we laughed so hard at this. It sounded so goofy. The children were also very bleu and innocent, they apparently found it very normal. But that caused a lot of discomfort for me. I was in my early twenties and hated it awkward. Every time Jonas’ mother came to pick up her son, I had to struggle to keep my face straight. That embarrassment is now gone and I still tell the story regularly, because it remains hilarious.”
