your new Samsung smartphone is only worth 56.7% of its original value
Bad surprise for the owners of the recent Galaxy S23, the value of the smartphones has completely dropped since their launch, which took place only two months ago.
It’s been known for a long time now that Android smartphones lose value faster than iPhones, and a new study by SellCell has just reaffirmed this, by comparing the devaluation of the recent Galaxy S23 to that of the iPhone 14.
Last year, the Galaxy S22s lost three times more value than the iPhone 13s two months after their release, but the good news is that the Galaxy S23s are doing much better than previous models.
Galaxy S23s see their value drop
According to figures from SellCell, the Galaxy S23 lost 41.1% of their value just 1 month after their release, and 43.3% after two months. Samsung therefore always does less well than Apple and its iPhone 14, which lost only 32.3% after one month and 31% after two months. We also see that the iPhone 14 regain a little value between the first and second month, a trend that has never happened with Android.
The Galaxy S23 therefore depreciated 1.4 times faster than the iPhone 14, which is ultimately not as significant a difference as in previous years. Details that this smaller gap is also attributed to the poor performance of the iPhone 14s, which devalue faster than previous models. The 14 series lost an average of 31.5% of its value in six months, while the 13 series lost 25.8% of its value over the same period for devices in new condition.
SellCell also notes that Samsung smartphones tend to hold their value a bit longer than Google ones. Pixel 7s lost 43.1% of their value after one month, and 45.9% after one month.
Which Samsung smartphones are losing the most value?
SellCell reveals that the Galaxy S23 Ultra 1TB variant is the one that has lost the most value in two months. This device priced at 1619 dollars lost 52.7% of its value in two months in a new screen. If you’re looking for a better investment, the iPhone 14 Pro Max 128GB should be your pick, as it’s only shed 13.6% of its selling price in two months.
The Galaxy S23+ with 256 GB of storage is the model that fared best, since its devaluation reached only 36.4% of its initial value ($999), which means that its current value is not surprisingly not very far from that of the Galaxy S23 Ultra with 1 TB of storage.
In 2023, we recall that Samsung had increased the prices of its Galaxy S23but also applied very strong discounts when pre-ordering devices. Samsung had notably launched an “X2 storage” campaign, which allowed those who ordered a Galaxy S23 with 256 GB of storage to obtain the version with 512 GB.
This has led consumers to favor the cheaper versions, and that was without taking into account the generous launch offers from Samsung. The Galaxy S23 Ultra with 512 GB, launched at 1599 euros, could finally be ordered at only 969 euros by combining several offers, a reduction of nearly 39.4% compared to its original price. We are therefore not far from the depreciation observed after two months.
For its part, the classic Galaxy S23 with 256 GB of storage released at 1019 euros was available for pre-order at only 559 euros, a significant reduction of 45%. On this model, SellCell tells us that the smartphone depreciated at 44.1% in new condition, which also more or less corresponds to the promotional offer when it was released in France.
