Stormy disruption, but expensive to host
In the less than two months that ChatGPT has been public, a lot of things, from homework to our sense of what is uniquely human, and what use we humans have, have been turned upside down. One study found that even lawyers may have to be quite concerned within 18 months.
The worldwide interest in ChatGPT is unprecedented. But it does cost OpenAI a lot of money to rent all the server space in the cloud. Converted it costs a few cents per chat. That is why OpenAI is now working on a revenue model, so that as an internet user you can consult ChatGPT for a few cents at a time.
The benefits of ChatGPT Professional
Open-AI is calling the paid version of ChatGPT ChatGPT Professional for now. The intention is that this version is always quickly accessible. Even if the free users are experiencing network overload. In addition, GPT Professional can be used as a chatbot. Furthermore, you can send ChatGPT twice as many requests per day as non-paying users can.
Limited opening position
At the moment ChatGPT Professional is not accessible to everyone. Interested parties can sign up for the waiting list here. It seems that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is setting up this service to experiment with, so that large volumes of customers can be served at a later stage.
Questions asked when signing up are things like: What is the most valuable thing you will use? And: what is the maximum price per month that you are willing to pay to use it?
New dichotomy between the haves and have-nots?
Initially, OpenAI chose to continue to grant access to everyone. Albeit that paid customers get better and faster access. The latter is in itself ethically justifiable.
It is more worrying that Bill Gates has a firm finger in Open AI. The wealthy Microsoft billionaire is known for his great aversion to anything free, especially open source software. It is therefore unfortunately not imaginary that access to ChatGPT will soon only be paid. So enjoy it while you still can.
