That she let another man into the house shortly after the divorce was not taken with thanks by her in-laws. Yet she would do it again in a heartbeat.

A helping hand
The children loved it, a year after the divorce finally a man in the house again – and incidentally a fourteen-year-old stepbrother. My environment thought otherwise. My ex-in-laws cut off contact, my brothers did not consider him welcome at family functions. How did I get it into my head to let a man into our lives so quickly? They had a point, because a year later he had flown again.

Still, I would do it again: you have to help people in need. To my children he was no more than a cozy guest who happened to sleep in their mother’s bed. By the way, I never spoke to my in-laws again when I lived alone again.”
