This 3D printed house is completely recyclable
Researchers have developed a house from the 3D printer that is fully recyclable and can therefore be reused. It works completely without cement.
In order to mitigate the consequences of climate change, it is necessary to reduce emissions. However, one sector in particular has catching up to do: the construction industry. Because for the production of one tonne of cement, 600 kilograms of greenhouse gases end up in the air.
Extrapolated to the entire planet, the construction industry is responsible for eight percent of global emissions. A rethink seems urgently needed. The only question is how buildings can be produced as sustainably as possible. A research team from University of Maine has an interesting suggestion ready.
3D printed house consists only of natural components
To do this, the US researchers borrowed the largest 3D printer in the world to print out four house modules. On a total of 56 square meters, what is probably the world’s first completely recyclable house from the 3D printer was created. All components are of natural origin.
In addition, the effort for planning and construction is relatively manageable. Because as soon as a computer has created the construction plans, the 3D printer prints out the modules. After half a day the house is at its destination. You then have to schedule another two hours for the electronics to be carried out by a specialist company.
New concept can solve several problems at once
With the new concept, the researchers are solving several problems at once. On the one hand, they are driving the transformation of the construction industry towards more sustainability. Because the house from the 3D printer does not need dirty components such as cement or concrete.
On the other hand, the recycling house could relax the tense housing market. Similar to Germany, there is not enough affordable housing in many places in the United States. With a sustainable system from the 3D printer, entire housing estates could be built within a few months.
