9 questions for the founders of “The Lion’s Den”

In this questionnaire we ask the founders and participants of the Vox show “The Lion’s Den” questions about their products and experiences on the show. This time: Michii and Martin Kopp, the founders of ModulFix.

ModulFix is a bungee cordthat adapts to individual needs. Due to its flexibility, it can be adjusted to the preferred length and fixed using an adapter cover. The adapter not only offers the option of using a bungee cord, but can also be used separately.

The combination of several ModulFix rubber bungee sets results in a wide range of fastening options. In the VOX start-up show “Die Höhle der Löwen”, Mich and Martin Kopp, the founders of ModulFix, caused enthusiasm and bagged a deal with their dream investor Ralf Dümmel.

ModulFix: The bungee cord from “The Lion’s Den”

BASIC thinking: Hello Michii, hello Martin, you are in the thirteenth season of “Die Höhle der Löwen”. How does that feel?

It is an incredible feeling and a great honor to be able to present your own product, which you and your brothers spent several thousand hours developing and bringing to market, to such a large audience. We had a lot of fun and really experienced every emotion you can imagine during the pitch. It was a real roller coaster of emotions.

What makes your ModulFix product so special?

We make a highly modular multifunctional tool out of a commercially available elastic strap, which is probably found in almost every household. Everyone knows the problem – either the elastic straps are too long or too short and the hooks at the end are usually completely unsuitable.

Thanks to the ModulFix, the length of the elastic band can be individually adjusted and at the same time ideally attached to any surface. This is achieved through a patented adapter system, which can be combined with various attachments such as Velcro, hooks or an eyelet.

A special feature is that the elastic band can not only be shortened, but also lengthened by combining different sets. In addition, the adapters can also be combined with one another without a rubber bungee, which makes ModulFix an extremely versatile and multifunctional product that combines numerous functions in a single tool.

The idea and concept behind ModulFix

How did you come up with the idea and concept of ModulFix?

We developed the ModulFix together via video chat in the first lockdown of 2020. Michii lives on Lake Constance and wanted to transport his stand up paddleboard from his apartment to the lake as quickly and conveniently as possible with the help of a transport vehicle.

However, there was no way to fix the SUP on the cart with conventional bungee cords because the length did not fit and the hooks were unusable.

Since there are no problems for us, only solutions, we invented the ModulFix together. A length-adjustable bungee cord with the option of choosing the appropriate bungee cord ends depending on the application and simultaneously fixing objects in three positions.

And how did you end up in The Lion’s Den?

We’ve been big fans of The Lion’s Den since season one. It was an incredible feeling to be able to present our product to experienced and critical investors. After our application we were invited to the pitch call in Munich and from there everything went very quickly. We received the invitation to the show and finally we were allowed to go to “The Lion’s Den”. An absolute dream came true.

The pitch and the negotiations

What was going through your mind just before your pitch?

To be honest, we’ve rarely been as excited in our lives as we were outside that door. It is an incredible feeling and a great honor to be able to present your own product, which you and your brothers have spent several thousand hours developing and bringing to market.

The few minutes in front of the door – which feels like an eternity – let the adrenaline level shoot up immeasurably. When we finally got the “go” we could hardly believe it, with every step towards the investors our lifelong dream became more and more a reality.

How did the subsequent negotiations go?

The due diligence that follows the verbal commitment from the show was handled in a highly professional manner by both sides, which also enabled us to quickly secure a deal.

ModulFix and “The Lion’s Den”

What has happened to you and your product ModulFix since the shoot and the participation?

Together with Ralf Dümmel and his whole team, we started working right after the show. Immediately after the shoot, the first topics were discussed, which were deepened a few days later at the DS Group headquarters in an all-day kick-off meeting. Without the great DS team, we as brothers would not have been able to set up a series production in the short time between recording and broadcast. The plastic components have been optimized for injection molding, the packaging and the instructions for use have been revised, and sales have been set up. The expertise of Ralf and his team helped us enormously to avoid mistakes and to set up a production in a targeted manner.

ModulFix: This is how the rubber straps will continue

And how does it continue? What are the next steps?

After a successful market entry, satisfied customers and continuous growth, we strive to position ourselves as an established brand in the bungee industry and to develop tailor-made sets for various target markets.

To this end, we are already working on expanding our range of adapters in order to be able to offer even more versatile set options and to further expand our sales market.

Looking back, how do you rate your experience at The Lion’s Den?

A dream came true for us. We are proud to have experienced the day of shooting and the entire application phase together. It’s definitely worth having the courage to apply to The Lion’s Den, as this pitch can take any startup to the next level. For us, the honest feedback from the lions in particular was invaluable. So dare and fulfill your dream!
