Incel: German meaning and explanation

You’ve been seeing the word incel more and more often in chats, on Twitter or Facebook lately. But what does incel mean in German and is it an insult or a mere description? We explain where the word comes from and how it is used.

Although it no longer seems so, the word “Incel” was a self-chosen name of a movement in the USA. On closer inspection, however, the term turns out to be false labeling out, because the statements behind it are more than dubious.

What’s incel in German?

Incel is made up of the two words “involuntary” and “cellibate” (celibate / abstinent). Incel can therefore be translated as “involuntarily abstinent”. Originally, it was purely a description of straight men who, for a variety of reasons, did not have sex – but would have liked to have had it.

How important is incel now?

The term Incel is now clearly distinguished from the terms “Absolute Beginners” and “Love-shyness”. This means people who have not had sex before because of their age or social circumstances.

Incels are a whole different caliber: they don’t have sex because of their personality and demands because they can’t find anyone willing to date them. The incel movement propagates misogyny, male supremacy and violence against women while wallowing in self-pity.

From the perspective of the incels, they are denied a “right to sex” and their whole situation is the fault of others – especially women and the “liberals”. They also believe there is a “conspiracy” against them that discriminates and excludes them from a “dating hierarchy” based on appearance, social status, and feminism.

Since the followers of the movement believe that they are denied numerous rights, they also claim the right to be violent towards women. In such relationships, incels often see themselves as the victims.

So when someone is referred to as an incel on the internet, that is certainly not a mere description and certainly not a compliment.
