81 percent think programming in schools deserves more attention

If you don’t have a good example, there is little chance that you will choose a certain profession. That is why it is also good if, for example, female IT professionals go to primary schools to have a chat about their profession. Our AW Poll shows that programming should be given more attention to children anyway. 81 percent think it deserves more attention. 17 percent think it is not necessary and 1 percent have no idea.

You can learn programming

Marvado has voted ‘yes’ anyway: “An Arduino is not necessary per se, but we are lagging far behind Europe-wide in terms of technical personnel, especially in the ICT sector. Furthermore, the Netherlands is also the weakest girl in the class, the participation of women in technology is sadly low. Hence including programming in primary education to stimulate.”

Ro.san.lola thinks it should go further than just programming: “I don’t think programming is necessary, but more general digital knowledge is important to me with young people. My almost 11-year-old daughter is taught almost the same way as when I was young… And that was 40 years ago. Much from books, little from digital means. Of course, this varies by school. At home she spends a lot of time on the phone and tablet. I do notice that she can speak much better English than I can at that age. Thanks to many English-language sites and games, the children also learn it more easily themselves. She also knows the technical insight and settings of telephone and tablet even better than I do.”

Rather write well

Effe also finds something else more important, but that has nothing to do with technology: “Lir kinderren irst es goet sgreifen.” Finally, @Tukker gives an answer that only Tukker can give: @tukker: “I think that Dutch, English and programming languages should be compulsory subjects in primary school. It is important to learn how automation works. I would like to recommend Twents as a 4th subject, because in the end you choose the rest. 😁“

If you do well with programming, then choosing rest is indeed faster a choice than if you don’t. We’ll be back next week with another poll, thanks for participating!
