iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 12 Pro
The iPhone 13 Pro is quite similar to its predecessor, but takes it up a notch in many ways. Apple no longer sells the iPhone 12 Pro itself, but you can still order it from many online stores. Moreover, it is now a lot cheaper. Is the new model worth the price difference? Let’s take a look at the differences in this iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 12 Pro comparison.
Table of Contents: iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 12 Pro
1. Familiar design
At first glance, the iPhone 13 Pro looks a lot like the iPhone 12 Pro. They have the same flat retro design that is reminiscent of the iPhone 4 and 5. The phones are also exactly the same size with a screen of 6.1 inches.
If you look a little longer, you will notice a few things. The cameras on the back (more on that later) are a lot bigger. The notch on the front is slightly smaller, so you have more effective screen space. Still, that doesn’t seem like a reason to choose the iPhone 13 Pro. The difference is minimal.
2. Smoother screen
This is where it gets interesting. The iPhone 12 Pro has an excellent OLED screen, but it is thick against the display of its successor. For example, the brightness of the iPhone 13 Pro is 1000 nits, while the 12 Pro does not go beyond 800 nits. You can definitely notice the difference, especially if you walk outside in the sun. The screen of the iPhone 13 Pro is then easier to read.
An even bigger advancement is ProMotion. The iPhone 13 Pro refreshes its pixels up to 120 times per second. This makes scrolling through your social media or playing certain games look much smoother. The iPhone 12 Pro has an ‘old-fashioned’ screen that only shows new content 60 times per second. When you put them side by side, the older model suddenly seems to stutter a bit.
3. A little faster
The A14 chip in the iPhone 12 Pro is lightning fast. The A15 in the iPhone 13 Pro is slightly faster. In practice you will hardly notice this for the time being. In addition, the difference between the chips seems quite small. Normally Apple blows high about the speed gain compared to the previous generation. This time they only compared the new chip to the Android competition. However, the A15 is slightly more economical, which results in a better battery life.
4. Greatly improved cameras
The biggest advancement of the iPhone 13 Pro vs the iPhone 12 Pro is in the cameras. In retrospect, the iPhone 12 Pro came out pretty bad. Where Apple gave the iPhone 12 Pro Max a larger sensor with improved stabilization, its smaller brother had to make do with the same, relatively modest sensor as the regular iPhone 12.
Fortunately, the iPhone 13 Pro has exactly the same cameras as the iPhone 13 Pro Max. That means a whopping primary sensor, which can capture a lot more detail. In addition, the ultra-wide-angle lens has also been thoroughly overhauled. It lets in much more light, which ensures sharper pictures with less noise, especially in the dark. You can now also zoom in optically three times with the telephoto lens. On the 12 Pro, that was only twice.
In addition, the iPhone 13 Pro has some cool new video features. With Cinematic Mode, for example, you can record movies with a professional depth-of-field effect. The new model is therefore a no-brainer for the enthusiastic photographer or videographer.
5. Longer Battery Breath
Most people get through the day with an iPhone 12 Pro. But a longer battery life is a better battery life. Apple promises that the iPhone 13 Pro will last an average of one and a half hours longer than its predecessor. That is of course very nice. Charging still goes through the Lighting port and you have to provide a charger yourself, because again it is not in the box.
6. One hundred euros more expensive
A separate iPhone 13 Pro with 128GB storage space will cost you 1159 euros. That’s as much as the iPhone 12 Pro a year ago. However, that device is now a bit cheaper. You can now get a separate iPhone 12 Pro for about 1065 euros. We expect that price to fall further in the coming weeks. Do you find it no problem to buy a refurbished device? Then you can already score a second-hand iPhone 12 Pro for about 930 euros.
Conclusion
The iPhone 13 series is a fairly modest update over the iPhone 12 models. Still, the iPhone 13 Pro offers a big leap forward. Certainly the cameras are a lot better than those of its predecessor. In addition, the device has a faster chip and longer battery life. Since the price difference is relatively small, we recommend that you go for the iPhone 13 Pro.
