5 functions that the iPhone SE 2022 really should have

It really seems to be happening now. The iPhone SE 2022 is almost presented and in this article we pass on our wish list. Do you have a pen and paper handy, Mr. Cook?

Read on after the ad.

iPhone SE 2022 wish list

Carefully circle March 8 in your calendar. If we are to believe the rumors, the new iPhone SE will be unveiled on that date.

We have now arrived at the third generation and although we are still very enthusiastic about the model from 2020, it is now really due for replacement. In this article we share our wish list for the iPhone SE 2022 – sometimes against our better judgement.

Index: iPhone SE 2022 wish list

1. A new design

Time travel is of course not possible, but those who look at the iPhone SE from 2020 will imagine themselves in the past. The device already looked old-fashioned two years ago, but is completely dated in 2022. The iPhone SE looks exactly the same as the iPhone 8 and therefore has a relatively small screen with large edges and a home button.

We therefore hope that Apple will bring a breath of fresh air through the design with the next edition. In particular the concept below (which shows what the device looks like can see) knows how to charm us.

The iPhone SE 2022 has a more modern design in which the display in particular becomes larger, without the housing growing with it. How? By significantly reducing the screen edges. By also omitting the home button (which contains the fingerprint scanner), the screen can become considerably larger.

After all, that home button is not necessary at all if the iPhone SE 2022 gets Face ID, or facial recognition. More expensive Apple phones have had this capability for years. However, the chances of this happening are slim, because almost all rumors say that Face ID will pass the iPhone SE 2022.

2. Better screen: LCD vs OLED

So we would like to see more screen, and less border. However, it remains to be seen how realistic this wish is. According to most rumors, the new iPhone SE will ‘just’ have a 4.7 inch display, just like the current model, with a home button.

In any case, let’s hope that Apple increases the image quality. This is possible, for example, by exchanging the LCD display for an OLED variant, which we know from the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, among others.

OLED screens are better than LCD displays, partly because individual pixels can be switched on and off. As a result, black colors really look black, in contrast to LCD panels. They still emit a little light in a dark image, so it is never really dark.

3. iPhone SE 2022 really needs a better camera

Apple also has the necessary steps to take in the camera area. The iPhone SE has never been a great photographer, but with enough daylight you can still take decent shots. In the dark, pictures with the 2020 variant are quickly grainy, especially because there is no Night mode.

However, it remains to be seen whether the iPhone SE 2022 will take major steps in the field of camera. For example, it is unlikely that a second camera will be added, but we secretly hope for this. However, there is a greater chance that Apple will mainly tinker with the camera software.

4. Ready for the future with 5G

There are still many uncertainties surrounding the new iPhone SE. However, we know one thing for sure. It seems very likely that the device will have an A15 Bionic chip. This powerful processor is also in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, so in terms of computing power it is good.

An additional advantage is that this A15 chip brings another long-awaited feature, namely 5G. The iPhone SE of 2020 can only handle 4G and that is scant in 2022. We therefore hope (and expect) that the 2022 version can handle 5G. After all, this network will be rolled out more widely in the Netherlands in the coming years.

Slightly stronger: it would be downright embarrassing if the iPhone SE 2022 can’t handle 5G. Even relatively cheap Android smartphones now have this option.

5. Better battery

As far as we’re concerned, the 2020 iPhone SE had two distinct drawbacks. As indicated earlier, the aircraft was not a high-flyer in the field of camera. Second, the battery life was disappointing. The device lasted a day(s) on a full battery charge, but there was nothing more in it.

It is therefore up to Apple to counter this criticism with the iPhone SE 2022. Hopefully the device will have a (slightly) larger battery than its predecessor, which has a capacity of 1821 mAh.

As far as we’re concerned, it’s not just the battery that needs to be bigger. The standard storage capacity can also be increased. The current iPhone SE starts at 64GB and that is anything but impressive. An entry-level capacity of 128GB for the iPhone SE 2022 would be more appropriate.

Apple shouldn’t change this

So far a lot of desires in this iPhone SE 2022 wish list. However, there are also things that Apple should not tinker with.

First, the size. As one of the last of the Mohicans, the iPhone SE can rightly be called a compact smartphone. While the rest of the smartphone landscape is expanding, Apple serves a specific target group with the SE that does not want this. It wouldn’t be smart to tamper with this.

The price is also important. The iPhone SE is for people who are looking for an iPhone, but don’t want to pay the top price. They don’t mind that they have to give up on some gadgets that the most expensive iPhone of the moment does have. If Apple is sensible, they will stick to the suggested retail prices of predecessors with the iPhone SE 2022. The iPhone 2020 had a starting price of 489 euros.

When is the iPhone SE 2022 release?

A well-known source claims that the iPhone SE 2022 will be unveiled on March 8. Then the first (virtual) Apple event of 2022 would take place. If this is correct, the new device will probably be in the shops in mid-March or April.
