5 films and series like Dune that you can stream on Netflix and Amazon

In case Denis Villeneuves Dune (2021) knocked you off the cinema stool, you might be looking for similar films or series. We have collected 5 streaming tips that are just as epoch-making, atmospheric or even crazy as the science fiction masterpiece.

Of course, Dune itself should not be missing from this list: There are some Dune adaptations that came before Villeneuves Dune and should not be forgotten. The most famous of these is without question Dune: The Desert Planet by David Lynch (1984), an impressive, surreal and ultimately confusing adaptation of the book; a film that is difficult to understand without knowing the story. Nonetheless, Lynch’s attempt at Dune is quite fascinating.

If you want to dive deeper into the universe, consider the British TV series Dune (2000) and Children of Dune (2003) recommended; they belong together and should be seen one after the other. Although these films do not keep up with Villeneuve’s visuality and are clearly not made for the cinema, they allow you to immerse yourself completely in the books: In a total of six 90-minute episodes you experience the first three parts of the book series with the cast. They’re pretty entertaining too.

If you were particularly impressed by the visuality of Dune, you have to be strong now: There aren’t many films (or series) that show similar epoch-making images, and even fewer that charge the whole thing in the style of Villeneuve with such a thick atmosphere . In this case, you are best advised to use Villeneuve’s other films: Blade Runner 2049 (2017) shows the cyberpunk future in masterful images and lets you recognize Villeneuve’s handwriting immediately.

Even Arrival (2016) is one of his best works: An original science fiction thriller in which a linguist makes contact with an unknown way of life.

When the monstrous angels attack the earth of the future, a mysterious special unit has to stop them: Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) is one of the most successful animes ever and tells a science fiction story that soon turns into a mystical psycho-drama. You can talk and think about this series for months – and while it tells a completely different story, it creates a similarly mysterious atmosphere to Dune. A recommendation especially for anime fans!

The fifth Element

Admit, The fifth element (1997) is more action-packed and sometimes also funnier than Dune, but some passages in their epic are quite reminiscent of Villeneuve’s film. In the sci-fi classic, a taxi driver (Bruce Willis) accidentally encounters a living master weapon (Milla Jovovich), which is the only one able to destroy the threatening evil in the universe. With the extravagant costumes, the brutal alien design and a dystopian-cynical atmosphere, Das fifth Element is a classic that you should catch up on.

Nausicaä from the valley of the winds

One of the most famous Ghibli films is also called the “Anime Answer to Frank Herbert’s Dune” in some circles (source: DazedDigital). It is not a Dune adaptation and the plot of the two works is considerably different – yet they both deal with a post-apocalypstic wilderness in which a Messiah-like figure tries to save the ecosystem. There are a lot of similarities, especially the subtle ecological criticism, which is not unimportant nowadays.

Ultimately, however, Nausicaä is of course a Ghibli film and enchants more with its breathtaking beauty than its dark epic. Which only benefits the Ghibli masterpiece.

The science fiction series was given a place of honor Babylon 5 (1993) In our list: Series creator J. Michael Straczynski was inspired, among other things, by the Dune universe, and in contrast to the Star Trek series, Babylon 5 deals more with mystical and philosophical topics. It’s not the same, but it’s definitely a series worth watching.
