4 weather apps to help you decide what to wear today

You rub the sleep out of your eyes, stare at your wardrobe and think: ‘what should I wear today?’ There are many factors that play into this, including what you will be doing that day, but also the weather. We cannot predict what you will do that day, but there are apps that can explain in great detail what you can expect from the weather that day. These apps will help you with that.

There is a reason that we like to talk about the weather in the Netherlands: it is very changeable. You often don’t have to have those conversations in a warm country. “Another sun today, huh?” We saw it again last weekend: one minute you’re sweating in your bikini on the beach, the next you have to wear a sweater because it’s raining and the wind is blowing hard. A weather app is certainly not an excess on your phone. These are four good options to help you choose when you’re standing in front of your wardrobe with a question mark over your head.

1. AccuWeather

AccuWeather is a household name. It is probably the most famous weather app in the world and that is partly due to how complete it is. You can find the weather in it, but also information about allergens, slipperiness, weather alerts, and so on. The advantage of such a well-known app is that it is available on many platforms, including even smartwatches. You now know exactly whether you need to put a rain suit in your bicycle bag, because the free AccuWeather can provide the weather forecast quite a long time in advance.

2. The Weather Channel

The free The Weather Channel is extremely reliable and easy to use, which makes it a great app to use. It is accessible, it is clear and you can use it to plan what you wear that day. Or that week, or in two weeks, because you can see the weather up to 15 days ahead. You can set warnings for extreme weather and you can also find sunrise, sunset and moon phases in it. Hay fever? The pollen can also be found in The Weather Channel. All of this also in Dutch, which makes The Weather Channel, despite its English name, a very suitable app for people who have less knowledge of that language.

3. Carrot Weather

It’s not nice to say, but many weather apps are extremely boring. If you want a little more humor in your weather forecast, the free Carrot Weather is the best app for you. This includes working with the predictions of several weather apps (including AccuWeather), but with a fine layer of artificial intelligence, a weather report is created as if Jan de Hoop did it. Sometimes it is a bit sarcastic humor, but since we as a people often complain about the weather, that is also a welcome change.

4. RadarScope

This is a fairly expensive app at 11 euros, but it is also extremely accurate. It even looks like an app that meteorologists could use to predict the weather as accurately as possible. That’s because it goes much deeper than most other apps: you can even see the reflectivity and dual-polarization, information that all comes from radar data from around the world. This app in itself is a little less exciting in the Netherlands than, for example, in a more mountainous area, or an area where there are occasional tornadoes and floods, but with the violent storms that we see more regularly, it is probably not an unnecessary luxury.
