4 tips and everything you need to know about this payment app

‘Send a Tikkie’ is a phrase that has become a permanent part of the Dutch language. But how does the Tikkie app work, and what else can you do with it? iPhoned tells you everything you need to know about this handy refund app.

Read on after the ad.

What is the Tikkie app and how does it work?

Tikkie, owned by ABN AMRO, now has millions of users. That is not surprising, because the free service can be used on both iOS and Android and makes it very easy to request money back quickly.

This makes Tikkie useful for anyone who occasionally goes out for a drink with friends and pays the bill at the end of the evening. The app is also useful when you advance a birthday gift or buy a group ticket for a festival.

Tikkie creates a payment link for you that you share with others. Anyone who opens the link can then transfer the pre-specified amount via iDeal with the push of a button. It is even possible to let your friends choose an amount to pay back.

How does a payment with Tikkie work: these are the rules

There are a few rules to making a Tikkie request. For example, your request may not exceed 750 euros. Your friends can refund a maximum of 2500 euros per request. In addition, you can receive a maximum of 2500 euros via Tikkie within 24 hours.

This is how you send a Tikkie to others

Tikkie is free to download and use, even if you are not an ABN AMRO customer. When you open Tikkie for the first time on your iPhone or iPad, enter your bank account number. Then the app always knows to which account the money should be transferred. After that it is very easy to create a payment link.

This is how you make a payment request in the Tikkie app

  1. Tap the plus icon at the bottom right;
  2. Open the Tikkie app;
  3. Type the amount you want to reclaim;
  4. Tap on ‘everyone’ and adjust the number of people (if necessary);
  5. Tap ‘Next’ and enter what you will receive the money for (party, gift);
  6. Tap the share button on the right to forward the payment request.

Now it’s up to the people you sent the link to to transfer the money. The payment link is always valid for two weeks.

Tikkie tips: you can also do this with the app

Creating and sharing a payment link is of course the most important function of Tikkie, but there are some other useful functions hidden in the app. We bundle these short Tikkie tips below.

1. Check who has already paid and who has not

Especially if you create a Tikkie for a large group of people, it can be difficult to remember who has already paid and who has not. Fortunately, you can see who has already paid per request in the Tikkie app on the ‘Overview’ tab. The app uses the name people use for their bank account for this, so often you’ll see a list of surnames here.

2. How to set a thank you gif in Tikkie: this is how it works

If someone has transferred money to you with Tikkie, a gif will automatically appear on the screen. The app chooses this itself, but you can also create or choose your own gif. You can read below how that works in the Tikkie app.

  1. Open the Tikkie app;
  2. Tap the menu at the top left of the screen;
  3. Choose ‘My thank you gif>Create new gif’;
  4. Make a gif of yourself or choose a gif and confirm your choice.

3. Special actions in Tikkie: this is how you use them

The app regularly has promotions that give you discounts or free products. It is possible that you can pick up a free can of Coke or you get a few euros discount on a snack. Fine, but how does that work in Tikkie?

Tap the menu button and choose ‘Actions’. You will then see the complete list with the complete offer. Note that every action has an end date. To get your money back, buy the product in the supermarket. Then scan the receipt and get your money back. You can only participate once per promotion.

4. Pay without a phone number: no problem with Tikkie

Do you want to send someone a Tikkie but don’t have his or her phone number or contact details? Then you create a QR code directly from the app. The person who pays can then scan the QR code with his or her Tikkie app and complete the payment request in this way. To create a QR code, do not tap the share button when making a payment request, but the QR code.
