iPhone outside the bedroom: here’s why
Often your iPhone is the last thing you see before you fall asleep and the first thing you pick up when you wake up. Just scroll on TikTok or read a book before you move to dreamland, and when you wake up immediately check whether there are any important emails, what your shares are doing, how things are going on social media and so on.
Especially if you use your iPhone as an alarm clock, it is important that the device is within reach, so that you can snooze for some extra minutes of sleep. But is that smart? Actually, the iPhone doesn’t belong in the bedroom at all and here’s why.
1. You sleep earlier
More and more Dutch people are experiencing sleeping problems. One of those problems is that people find it difficult to fall asleep. We keep our brain busy all day long and the moment we lie in bed, your head suddenly works overtime and you can’t find peace.
Your iPhone is one of the reasons why that happens. The screen of your iPhone is too bright and emits a lot of blue light. That tells your brain to wake up instead of falling asleep.
In addition, smartphones are designed in such a way that they constantly stimulate you with new information. Even if you only read a book, you will receive notifications from all kinds of apps and before you know it you will be on social media again or reading an e-mail. To fall asleep well, you need as few stimuli as possible.
2. You sleep better
An iPhone in the bedroom causes unrest, because if you can’t sleep well for a while, you quickly tend to grab the device. Since we do everything via our iPhone nowadays, you also take your work, your social contacts, the world news and much more to bed at that time.
And then we’re not even talking about all the possible notifications you can get in the middle of the night. Even if you don’t wake up consciously, such a vibration or beep can wake you up from your deep sleep, making you feel a lot less rested the next day.
3. You sleep longer
Many people immediately grab their smartphone when they wake up, which ensures that the brain is also turned on again. While you might have easily slept an extra hour if you had stayed relaxed. This is especially dangerous for people who wake up way too early.
Do you have to get up early and that’s why you set the alarm on your iPhone? Then it’s made way too easy for you to snooze with that phone next to your pillow. But that is of no use to you. Not only do you not really rest between those snooze moments, there is a good chance that you will be a lot sleepier for the rest of the day.
You can still set the alarm via your iPhone, but then put it on the charger in the hallway so that you have to get out of bed immediately when the alarm goes off.
4. More room for intimacy
If you and your partner both take your smartphones to bed, it’s disastrous for your intimacy. Whether it’s about sex, a conversation or something else: if someone is absorbed in the clear screen of their iPhone, intimacy is often not an option. If you both leave the iPhone outside the bedroom, you will not only sleep longer and better, but you will probably also have more eye for each other.
How do you do it then?
One way to do this is to place a charging station outside the bedroom. Before you go to bed, put your iPhone on it (and perhaps your Apple Watch and AirPods), after which you can go out the next day with fully charged devices.
And if you really don’t feel like getting up immediately when you hear the alarm clock to turn off the iPhone, or if you don’t want to wake others in the house with your alarm, then it is better to have a ‘dumb alarm clock’ in the bedroom. to make.
Of course you can also use the Apple Watch. Wear it on your wrist (on airplane mode) and you can immediately measure how well you slept. The Apple Watch now tracks sleep phases. Above all, it is very useful to be able to set silent alarm clocks so that you are awakened without your partner being bothered by it.
