While it has many benefits, there are also some points to consider when driving an electric car. Fortunately, several apps can help with that. Electric driving is being further developed and many manufacturers now have one or more (partially) electric models. When planning a day trip, a holiday, or a ‘normal’ ride, it can be useful to familiarize yourself with the places where you can charge in advance. And is that fast charging, 3-phase charging… all questions that you should consider beforehand. DroidApp lists 11 apps that should make the life of an owner of an electric car a bit better.
ABRP: A Better Route Planner
You can of course plan your route with apps like Google Maps. However, this application does not take into account the fact that you have to charge your electric car every so many kilometers. Fortunately, there is the app ‘ABRP’, which stands for A Better Routeplanner. An ideal navigation app for the electric car. It is optimized for this. You select a vehicle, and you can indicate how full your battery is now. When planning your route, an optimal route is planned, including stops at the charging stations. The PlugShare app describes itself as the largest community of EV drivers. It provides information on more than 300,000 charging stations in North America and Europe, as well as in various other parts of the world. Logged in you get extra options such as filter charging points that fit your car, plan your trips and share your experiences with the community. The app is clear and user-friendly. You can also check in via the PlugShare app to let them know that you are charging or waiting for a free space. You can also let others know that there is a malfunction, something is not working or leave a different comment.
Charge map
As the name of the app ‘Chargemap’ suggests, this application allows you to view a map of the charging stations. Not only in the Netherlands and Belgium, but all over the world. The filters are useful in this regard, with which you can filter on, for example, the charging capacity, the type of connector and only charging points along highways, free charging stations or those that are open 24/7. You can immediately see the charging speed and the state of the charger by means of the icons. Once logged in you will see the current rates. With Chargemap you can also see which charging stations are located along your route.
charge price
There can be big differences in the price of a charging station. It therefore certainly does not hurt to compare the rates. In the application you set which car you have. You can indicate at each charging station at what time you start charging. You can also indicate in the settings which charge card or charge cards you have. Then the rate is taken into account. The rates of the various providers at a charging station are shown in the Chargeprice app.
Nextcharge charging points
The Nextcharge Charging Points application is also a well-known application for finding a charging station in your own area. This application shows the different charging stations worldwide. You will also see additional information for each pole. Think of the price and the available connections. App users can also rate the charging station and, if available, view photos of the location. If the information is available, it is also shown whether a charging station is occupied. You can also navigate to it and use the search function to filter for suitable charging stations.
Sygic
Sygic has been offering support for electric cars in its navigation app for some time now. When using it for the first time, you choose an offline map to download. In the side menu you can switch to the EV Mode and you can look for the charging stations on the map. You must first download the map for each country. If you have activated the EV Mode, the navigation app takes charging stations into account when navigating, whereby the charging stations are also shown along the way. The route guidance with regard to electric cars is not as extensive as with ‘A Better Routeplanner’.
EV Charging by NewMotion and Shell Recharge
The ‘EV Charging by NewMotion’ app is only intended for owners of a NewMotion charge card. You can use this app to search and navigate to available charging points throughout Europe and some countries beyond. You can also immediately start or stop a charging session with the app, if the charging station supports this. You can filter on the type of charging stations and receive a notification when your favorite charging station becomes available. The Shell Recharge app is similar, but specifically for the Shell Recharge charge points.

ChargeFinder
The name of the app ‘ChargeFinder’ actually already reveals what you can do with it. With this application you can map out a route and then look up the different charging stations on the route. You can do this throughout Europe. If the information is available, you will also see how many charging stations are available or occupied, together with the connection. With each result you can also see which useful places are nearby; such as a hotel, restaurant or supermarket.
FastNed
In the Netherlands, FastNed is a well-known provider for fast charging stations. You will find them mainly along the highway and there are also a few locations outside the Netherlands. The locations of these places can all be found in the FastNed app. You can also plan routes via FastNed’s chargers and start a charging session with one click. The availability of the car chargers is also present in the app. Of course, this application only takes into account FastNed’s own charging stations.
Tesla
Tesla has a large share in the electric car. If you own a Tesla, the Tesla app should not be missing on your smartphone. With this application, users can always communicate with their car and their Powerwall. You can see the charging progress live, send an address, lock or unlock the car and adjust other options of your Tesla. Of course it is also possible to find SuperChargers nearby. These charging stations are especially for Teslas.
