√ Write root character with keyboard on PC and Mac

Insert root character on Windows
In contrast to many other symbols, such as the trademark symbol, there is unfortunately no key combination for writing the root character. Nevertheless, there is a simple method to bring the single root sign or entire formulas with roots onto the screen:
- On Windows, press the Windowsbutton and ..
- The special character keyboard opens. First select the symbols behind the button with the triangle, plus, percent and merchant sound in the upper area.
- Then use the menu above to select the section for the mathematical symbols out.
- Scroll down a little until you see the √.
- Once clicked, the character is copied to the clipboard and you can paste it into your document.
Write the root character with the keyboard: Here’s how
In Word you can also insert the character like this:
- In Word, press ” in the menu bar at the topInsert“.
- On the far right is the icon “symbol“. Vote over here “More symbols“.
- A new window is opening up. There you select from the drop-down menu at “subset” the “Mathematical Operators”.
- Here you will find the root sign. Above “Insert“ the character appears in the Word document: √

You can now copy the character and paste it elsewhere, for example in the Facebook chat window.
Write root sign with keyboard on PC and Mac: Insert mathematical formula
On some computers, the symbol can also be inserted using an alt code. For this hold the Oldkey and press the numbers on the numeric keypad 08730. On the Mac you add the character over Old + V a.
Word also offers the possibility of writing whole formulas with radical symbols. This works like this:
- Click on “Insert” in the toolbar again.
- Now you do not choose the “symbol” but “formula”.
- A new section will appear in the Word document. At the top of the menu bar, select “Square Square” to create a formula for a square root function.
- Now enter the appropriate values for your root function at the appropriate positions. The result then looks like this:
Write root sign on mobile phone
On the smartphone you can find the character very quickly using the keyboard:
- When the letters are displayed, first press the “?123” button on the bottom right.
- Then you tap on “=?” about that.
- Now you can select the √ icon in the top row.
