YouTuber defends himself – and wins

Nintendo has been known to regularly block videos for copyright infringement. The company also struck at the end of 2022 and blocked, among other things, a video about a never-released Zelda game – but the channel didn’t let that sit on it.

Nintendo: Banned Zelda video is back

Most of the videos blocked by Nintendo remain so, but the YouTube channel DidYouKnowGaming has fought back. Point of contention is a documentary about a lost zelda game for the Nintendo DS. Heroes of Hyrule never made it past the creative stage.

Developer Retro Studios, a subsidiary of Nintendo, pitched the game at the time when the game company was just finishing Metroid Prime 2. It is not known why, but the idea of the Zelda game was quickly scrapped. But interesting for fans: The title contained the first ideas for the universe of The Legend of Zelda.

When Nintendo discovered the documentary in December 2022, it was removed from YouTube. “Unauthorized material” would have been used. Shane Gill, the person behind “DidYouKnowGaming” didn’t let it sit and put the video back online. He exercises his right challenge the alleged copyright infringement on YouTube. Now Nintendo has 10 days to prove that their complaint is valid (source: Shane Gil@Twitter).

How is Nintendo reacting to this?

So far, the company has not yet commented. Shane Gill wrote on Twitter that he has been waiting for an email or letter from Nintendo for two weeks. Gill has a theory as to why the video was blocked. It would be Nintendo’s intention to remove this piece of journalistic work from the internet because they didn’t like what the YouTuber revealed.
