‘You should never say this to new mothers’

“As a mother of three, I can assure you it’s best not to say this,” Katie begins her blog.

‘Forbidden’ statements against new mothers

1. ‘Is it a sweet baby?’

“Is there such a thing as an unlovable baby?” Katie wonders. “If a mother wants to say something negative about her baby, she does it automatically. Babies have good days and bad days.”

2. ‘You look good for someone who has just given birth’

This is not a compliment, assures Katie. “It’s rude. So you’re basically saying she looks good for someone who has just given birth, is leaking all over, is getting used to her new life and is overtired.”

3. ‘When is the second (or third or fourth) coming’

You should never ask this, but certainly not if someone has just given birth. “That’s probably the last thing they’re on at the moment,” Katie said.

4. ‘I was back to my old weight after x number of weeks’

“Don’t,” says Katie. “Every mom is different and losing weight fast isn’t everyone’s priority.”

5. Unsolicited Advice

No, you don’t have to tell a new mom how you handled it all. “She doesn’t want to know how you made sure your child slept through, how you lost weight or how you managed to shower or eat. Unless she asks for your advice, of course.”
