You should avoid this function

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are pretty power hungry. But that is also due to the way they are used. In our video we show alternatives so that gamers can save power and money.

Pure game machines are no longer modern consoles. With various additional functions, they try to convince gamers not to use products from the competition. How it is ordered in terms of power consumption is often a minor matter. Right now in times of skyrocketing energy prices, it pays to take a closer look – because alternatives are worthwhile in order not to have to spend money unnecessarily.

PS5 and Xbox Series X: Streaming eats up electricity

Even if it certainly seems comfortable: The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X should not be used for streaming. They are simply too power-hungry to simply run films or series on them. The PlayStation 5 treats itself to Netflix streaming with 4K resolution alone 70 to 80 watts And then there’s the power consumption of the television.

It will be much cheaper if a Streaming device like an Apple TV 4K or a Chromecast Ultra is used. The Apple TV 4K only needs 6 watts to display high-resolution Netflix content, and the Chromecast Ultra only needs a small 3.4 watts. Alternatively, of course, streaming devices can be dispensed with entirely and apps can be used on the Smart TV instead.

The Xbox Series X looks a little better in terms of efficiency, but even the Microsoft console can’t keep up with streaming devices specially made for it. At 4K streaming will be consumes about 46 wattswith the 120 Hz mode switched on it is 57 watts (source: 4K movies)

Consoles: Save power with Full HD instead of 4K

Apart from video streaming, you can also save quite a bit of power if you go without a 4K resolution and instead Full HD is used. It also makes a noticeable difference whether a PS5 or PS4 game is running on the PlayStation 5. With the PS4 variant, around half of the electricity can be saved.

Even when switched off, the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X consume electricity. on the convenient stand-by mode can be omitted to reduce power consumption.

PlayStation 5: Better no streaming service

With the PlayStation 5, there is another reason why the console is not necessarily suitable for Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video. Although the platforms now offer a lot of content in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, the PS5 falls back to regular HDR10 (source: Game Tips). The best possible picture and the best possible sound is not available on the Sony console.
