Turn off the heating, make the house more sustainable, put on a pair of thick socks: with these sky-high gas prices, we pull out all the stops to save some money. Taking shorter showers can also help. How much water (and therefore money) will you save? We looked it up for you.

Just grab that kitchen timer.

Take a shorter shower: you save that much

Any idea how long you’re in the shower? If we look at the average Dutch person, that is about 9 minutes. Until six months ago, you probably didn’t realize that, but now that gas prices are going through the roof, such a shower suddenly costs a lot of money. In an average household, about 110 (!) liters of hot water come out of the shower every day. This is equivalent to an annual consumption of 210 m3 (cubic metre) of gas. With an average gas price of 3.82 per m3, you quickly arrive at an amount of 802 euros per year. And that can be done cheaper.

Count out your profit

7 out of 10 Dutch people take a shorter shower these days, according to a survey by Kieskompas and ANP. And that’s a good habit, because that saves you quite a bit of gas. A household that showers for a maximum of five minutes saves more than 15,000 liters of hot water and 60 m3 of gas per year. Depending on your gas rates, this can easily save you 90 to 220 euros per year. So hop, timer for five minutes and count out your winnings. Oh, and showering with your partner at the same time is of course even cheaper
