Google’s Pixel range has been really messed up this year. The year started with rumors about the Pixel 5a, which might not hit the market. Finally, the Pixel 5a 5G was announced last week, but only after Google already revealed several details about the upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. With the Pixel 6 approaching, the end of the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G has arrived – although they are still for sale in the Netherlands.

Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G

The flagship of the Google Pixel series, the Google Pixel 5, disappears from the podium after less than a year. It is striking that the production of the device is interrupted so early. Google’s Pixel 6 is expected to appear only in October; until then, the Pixel series will have to do without a high-end model.

A reason for the discontinuation of production is not given by Google. It was previously rumored that Google is feeling the consequences of Qualcomm’s chip shortages; it may have been unable to “get” enough copies of the Snapdragon 765G to keep both the Pixel 5a and Pixel 5 available.

The other device that Google is forgoing, the Pixel 4a 5G, is the spiritual predecessor of the Pixel 5a 5G that was announced last week. Specifications of the two Google Pixel phones are almost the same. This device was previously expected that Google would pull the plug after the Pixel 5a 5G launch. What the end of production of the device will mean for the availability in Europe, where the 5a 5G will not appear, is not known.

In the US Google Store, both the Google Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5 are sold out. In a response to The Verge, Google confirmed that the devices will definitely be sold out ‘during the next few weeks’. Both the German and French Google stores still have stocks of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. The search giant did not disclose the size of the stocks of European stores.

For the time being, both the Google Pixel 5 and the Pixel 4a 5G are still available at European web stores. If you would like to buy the phone in the Netherlands – possibly with a subscription – you can go to Belsimpel or Mobiel.nl. Below you will find the prices at the time of publication:

Google Pixel 6 on the way

If you would like to get the best of the best, it might be a good idea to wait a little longer before pressing the order button. After all, Google is expected to launch the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro in October. For the first time, these devices get a Google chipset, the Tensor SoC, and contain a completely new camera module. Earlier, Google already showed the first renders of the official design. As expected, they are not officially coming to the Netherlands, but you may be able to purchase them via gray imports.
