You can now view Amsterdam in 3D via Immersive View of Google Maps

From today you can view Amsterdam with Immersive View from Google Maps. With this new feature you can fly around 360 degrees and enjoy the canals, parks and buildings of Amsterdam. That is how it works.

What is Immersive View?

During Google I/O 2022, CEO Sundar Pichai presented Immersive View in Google Maps for the first time. Using artificial intelligence, Google combines satellite photos, Street View imagery and aerial photos to create realistic renderings of famous landmarks in cities such as Barcelona, ​​London and New York.

For example, would you like to visit the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben during your city trip? Before you actually decide to go there, you can already see these iconic sights from all angles in Google Maps. Immersive View was initially available in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo, and then gradually expanded to include an additional 100 landmarks. At the beginning of this year it was announced that Immersive View is also coming to Amsterdam and that moment has now arrived.

Google puts it nicely: Starting today, Amsterdam will come to life through Immersive View on Google Maps. Moreover, thanks to artificial intelligence, you can check the crowds in this way at any time of the day, find the entrance to a building and get an impression of the weather.

With Immersive View you can not only explore the well-known tourist attractions of Amsterdam such as the Royal Palace and the Jordaan, but also discover lesser-known locations. Fly like a bird over the city and explore the Spoorzicht nature park, the Oranjekerk, the restaurant and arcade TonTon Club or the Q-Factory music venue.

This feature is also ideal for your summer vacation abroad. For example, you can already pay a virtual visit to the Ponte Vecchio in Florence or Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin to get a taste of the place and its surroundings. And when you arrive at your destination, you can instantly check the crowds and view the weather at a specific time by sliding the timeline.

Immersive View is now available in Amsterdam, Venice, Florence, Dublin and more than 500 other global attractions, including Sydney Harbor Bridge and Prague Castle.

Even more new features in Google Maps

In addition to Immersive View, Google Maps is introducing two new updates in the Netherlands. Starting this month, you can follow directions without having to unlock your lockscreen or go to the app. You also immediately see which turn to take and the estimated time of arrival.

In addition, you can now easily find previous search locations via the ‘recent’ tab. This makes planning multiple trips and plotting routes to different destinations in your itinerary a lot easier according to Google. This feature is only available on desktop.
