You can buy the oldest emoticons in the world! :-)

Everything is for sale. So also the oldest emoticons in the world. They will soon be sold in America.

The oldest emoticons in the world are also the most famous in the world. They are πŸ™‚ and πŸ™ and will be auctioned in America. Creator Scott Fahlman will sell them as a non-fungible token (NFT), a non-exchangeable attribute that guarantees ownership.

The emoticons are thus poured into an NFT. These tokens are linked to a digital ‘something’. Think of a picture or a meme. In this case, an emoticon. The token is proof of ownership of this. They can then be stored anywhere in the world.

Heritage Auctions is the auction house that will guide the process. The emoticons come with an official certificate and two essays from Fahlman. He is a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. So he can write essays.

He calls the emoticons β€œthe first steps towards a new kind of universal language” in one of these two essays. The emoticons are quite old. They were first used on September 19, 1982 by Fahlman. Of course the emoticon πŸ™‚ had to indicate a joke in the first place. Amazingly, πŸ™ stood for “I’m serious”. Many people now use it to show if you’re not happy with something.

NFT

Last year was the year of NFTs. There were never more sold than this year. Think of the first tweet ever on Twitter, or music, or a doll. Sometimes this resulted in millions of euros. Whether that will be achieved remains to be seen.
