Xiaomi makes phone with a back that changes color
Xiaomi is developing a phone that will come with a photochromic or electrochromic back. That is a back that can change color, on command or when the sunlight shines on it. It is unknown when the smartphone will hit the market.
Electrochromic and Photochromic Technology
Xiaomi wants to present a striking design in one of its upcoming smartphones. This is according to information from the well-known Chinese rumor spreader Digital Chat Station. Xiaomi is currently working on a phone that will have an electrochromic or photochromic back.
A photochromic back can completely change color depending on the sunlight shining on the smartphone. It is a technique that is already used in sunglasses so that glasses turn dark when sunlight hits them.
The OnePlus Concept one
Electrochromic technology works differently, and we’ve seen it before in a smartphone concept from OnePlus. The Concept One phone had a piece of glass in front of the camera that turned from transparent to black when the camera was not in use. That way the lens disappeared and you were actually looking at a completely black back. With an electrochromic back, the color changes according to electrical voltage.
At the moment there is still a lot of uncertainty about Xiaomi’s plans. We do not yet know which technology the manufacturer will use and whether it is exactly what phone it is. It is also possible that this smartphone will eventually be launched only for the Chinese market, but in any case it is interesting that manufacturers are still working with this technology.
