The Counterpoint firm has published its report on the year 2020. Xiaomi took the opportunity to become the third seller of smartphones on the old continent while at the same time, Huawei sank.
It’s no surprise, in 2020 smartphone sales fell 14% compared to 2019. During the Covid-19 pandemic, many consumers preferred to save rather than invest in phones. In addition, many “non-essential” businesses have closed their doors, including mobile outlets. Despite a catastrophic month of April on a global scale, manufacturers have managed to do well, including Xiaomi.

Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme and Apple: good students with different destinies
According to the Counterpoint report, despite a general fall in the market, four brands stood out during 2020. Xiaomi, Apple, Oppo and Realme all had different destinies but with one common denominator: success.
- Xiaomi achieved 90% growth in one year. The Chinese manufacturer has become the third brand in Europe with a total of 26 million phones sold. Last year, it sold 14 million products. Over the months, the brand asserts itself as the alternative to Apple and Samsung.
- Realme on the other hand is the company with the most impressive growth. The manufacturer saw its sales grow by 1083% with 1.6 million phones sold. This can be explained in particular by arriving in France surrounded by efficient and attractive communication.
- Oppo is the third Chinese brand to enjoy exponential growth in 2020. It is first of all the Find X2 range which has succeeded in seducing a large part of the public but not only. The manufacturer has forged partnerships with European operators such as Vodafone or Orange to sell 6.5 million phones. In total, it is a growth of 82% that has been recorded.
For Apple, the situation is slightly different. In doing so, the Cupertino company fell slightly with a 1% drop. But this does not reflect the good health and especially the formidable fourth quarter made by the manufacturer in terms of sales.
Huawei soon to disappear from the European market, Samsung will have to rely on the Galaxy S21 Ultra
If Xiaomi completes the podium of phone sales in 2020, it is to the detriment of Huawei. As always, stuck in American sanctions, the Chinese brand is gradually disappearing from the European market. With Honor, the brand only sold 22 million phones against 40 million in 2019. The fourth quarter of the year was particularly difficult with 3.6 million devices sold. Huawei having sold Honor in December 2020, a solution will have to be found quickly so that the Chinese firm can hope to bounce back.

Finally, for Samsung, the situation is different. Overall, 2020 is a tough year for the manufacturer with a 12% drop in phone sales. In total, the South Korean firm has still sold 59.8 million mobile in 2020. As for Apple, this does not represent a trend, since the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is expected to be one of the Android phones that will dominate the market in 2021.
