Will Netflix soon start charging for account sharing?

Netflix is now offering a profile transfer feature. In the future, subscribers will also be able to access their personal data with a new account. The streaming provider is apparently paving the way for charging additional fees for account sharing.

Whether it’s among family or friends, sharing a Netflix account is a common practice in most households. But if a shared account can no longer be used by everyone, the data will be lost. Especially when users have put a lot of time into personalizing their accounts.

Netflix announces profile transfer

Like Netflix now though announced, the streaming platform is rolling out profile broadcasting globally. With the new function, users who leave a jointly used account can transfer their data to their own profile.

This includes, for example, the personal watch list, ratings for films and series that have already been streamed, as well as saved games and other settings.

This is how users can transfer their profile

According to Netflix, the company is now rolling out the new feature globally. However, the function will only be available gradually. Accordingly, all users will receive a notification as soon as they can transfer their account.

From then on, subscribers will find the new option in the drop-down menu on the Netflix homepage. In addition, the profile transfer can be deactivated again at any time in the account settings.

Netflix generates additional revenue streams

The profile transfer could be a first indication that Netflix wants to charge an additional fee for shared accounts. Because so-called account sharing, i.e. users sharing an account across a household, is actually not allowed and has been a thorn in the side of the company for a long time.

In some Latin American countries Netflix has been charging an additional fee since July 2022. The company had previously introduced profile transfer there as well. It is therefore considered likely that account sharing will soon also cost something in this country.

However, due to the drop in user numbers, the streaming provider is currently also looking for new sources of income. The company recently announced that it would launch a new Netflix subscription plan with advertising starting in November 2022.
