Will Google Pixel 8 get a new main camera?

Google makes it exciting, the Google Pixel 8. We do not expect huge changes between the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8, but the device appears to bring something different in terms of camera. The upcoming Pixel, 8, will get a new main camera.

Pixel 8

Kamila Wojciechowska has already leaked several things about the Pixel 8 (and we wouldn’t be surprised if they continue to do so in the near future) and now she comes through Android Authority with the new that a new main sensor is being put on the device. It would concern both the Pixel 8 and the more luxurious variant, Pixel 8 Pro.

It’s the Samsung ISOCELL GN2: that’s a 50 megapixel sensor. It is the successor to the GN1 that you can find in the Pixel 6 and 7. It is the same sensor as in the Samsung Galaxy S22 and the Samsung Galaxy S23. It’s an upgrade to Pixel’s photos, as the sensor is larger and can therefore capture a lot more light. And light is of course a magic word when it comes to photography. The GN2 would capture 35 percent more light. On top of that, it also allows for 8K video recording and something called staggered hdr.

Staggered hdr

Staggered HDR means that the camera sensor can take photos very quickly with different amounts of light. Those photos are then merged and the result is that the light remains nice and light and the dark nice and dark, and that a lot of detail remains. In addition, there is also an extra for the Pixel 8 Pro. It has another upgrade in the form of a time-of-flight sensor: it has an 8×8 ToF VL53L8 sensor. All Pixel phones that have Tensor chips already have such a sensor, but the one in the Pixel 8 Pro benefits extra because it improves autofocus.

Pixel 8 Pro also gets the 64 megapixel Sony IMX787 as an ultra-wide-angle camera, while the Pixel 8 gets a 12 MP Sony IMX386 to take ultra-wide-angle photos. And remember that temperature sensor we spotted on that leak from a few weeks ago of the 8 Pro? That would be the Melexis MLX90632.

Camera app

The camera app would have the ability to create bokeh effects in videos via a ‘cinematic’ mode and there will be an ‘adaptive torch’ that adjusts the LED light on the device based on the environment. There will also be ‘segmentation AWB’ with which a photo is ‘chopped’ into different pieces with AI for better processing.
