Skeptical about VR headset

Initial enthusiasm about the VR headset has now turned into skepticism, as eight (former) Apple employees who work with The New York Times spoke. The employees are not convinced that the product will appeal to customers.

The employees are concerned about price, utility and the unproven market. The device – which Apple is expected to present in June – is reported to cost around $3,000. Skeptics see the VR headset as a solution in search of a problem, unlike products like the iPhone and iPod.

Due to the high doubts about the potential of the product, some Apple employees have left the VR headset development team. Others have been fired for lack of progress with the device’s functionality. Some Apple executives also question the potential of the headset.

Functions

What became clear from previous reports is that Apple is not targeting the masses with the VR headset. The device will be more attractive to businesses than the general public. According to The New York Times Apple will mainly pitch the headset as a tool for augmented reality video conferencing and meetings.

Also, Apple believes the headset is used as a creative tool, such as editing photos and videos in a 3D space. In addition, the Apple Reality serves as a personal TV cinema. To this end, Apple is working with Hollywood producers, including Jon Favreau, to create content for the headset.

The American newspaper also confirms earlier rumors about the mixed reality headset. It has a carbon frame, outward-facing cameras, dual 4K screens, prescription lenses for eyeglass wearers, and an external battery in a hipbelt.

Apple is expected to launch the headset in June, but employees are also skeptical about that. They speculate that Apple could delay the launch again. Do you want to stay informed of developments? Sign up for our newsletter!
