Why you should buy an iPhone 13 now (and why not)

The iPhone 13 has been out for almost a year now. That means that the iPhone 14 will be in stores in about two months. Is it still wise to buy an iPhone 13?

Read on after the ad.

Buying an iPhone 13 now: the pros and cons

Are you looking for a new smartphone? Chances are you’re in doubt: should you buy an iPhone 13 now, or is it wiser to wait for the iPhone 14? Apple is expected to announce the new iPhones in September. In this article you can read why you can now buy an iPhone 13 – but also why it is better to wait a little longer.

Pros: with the iPhone 13 you get a fantastic smartphone

Technology moves so fast that it is difficult to keep up with the latest developments. The fact is that your iPhone is already outdated as soon as you get it. Of course that is somewhat exaggerated, but the latest model is also replaced after a maximum of a year for an even newer device.

The iPhone 13 series consists of four fantastic smartphones that will keep you going for many years to come. For most people, the Pro model in particular is quite decent overkill in terms of specifications. Apps load very quickly, the camera performs well above average and the battery lasts longer than ever. So the big question is: to what extent are you really missing out by not waiting for the iPhone 14? †Spoiler alert: probably little).

Con: The iPhone 13 will be much cheaper in a few months

If you buy an iPhone 13 now, you’ll probably pay a lot more than in a few months. As soon as a new model comes out, the price of the ‘old’ model drops considerably. This is sometimes hundreds of euros – and for that money you can do a lot of fun things.

Also, the price of refurbished iPhone 13 smartphones gets lower as time goes by. If you don’t have it very broad, it pays to be patient a little longer.

Pros: The iPhone 14 gets roughly the same specs as the iPhone 13

Don’t want a Pro iPhone but a regular model? The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro are rumored to be quite different from each other, but the ‘normal’ 13 and 14 are very similar. For example, the iPhone 14 retains the A15 chip of its predecessor and nothing changes to the design (except for a few new colors).

The changes are probably mainly in the camera area. We also expect the iPhone 14 to have an exclusive software function again. Almost every new Apple device comes with such a feature, which is only available for the latest model.

Cons: An older device means fewer software updates

If you buy an iPhone 13 now, you are purchasing a device that has been on the market for almost a year. That probably also means that you will receive updates for a year less than the iPhone 14. This is not a bad thing, because Apple usually supports its smartphones for five years (or even longer). The chance that you will do five years with the same iPhone is not that great.

Do you plan to resell your iPhone after a few years? Even then it pays to choose the very latest model, especially because a new device simply lasts longer.

Pro: Want a mini iPhone? Then you have to choose the 13

Apple’s mini-iPhones are not a great success. That is why the manufacturer pulls the plug and the iPhone 14 only comes in a ‘normal’ 6.1-inch version and a Max variant on the market, which has a 6.7-inch screen. Are you one of the few people who really want a compact smartphone? Then the iPhone 13 mini is your only choice.

There is also a counter-argument. Do you want a large screen but not a Pro iPhone, because you think it is too expensive? Then the iPhone 14 is your only choice. The iPhone 14 Max has the large screen of the Pro version, but is also a bit cheaper.
