Why there might not be an Apple event in March

The first Apple event of 2022 will take place on March 8 – rumor has it. Apple would then announce the new iPhone SE and iPad Air, among other things. But will that March event ever happen?

Read on after the ad.

Apple event in March?

That Apple is organizing an Apple event on (or just after) March 8, was stated by journalist Mark Gurman of Bloomberg† He is very knowledgeable when it comes to unannounced Apple products and has a proven track record.

According to Gurman, this is a virtual event, introducing the new iPhone SE 2022 and iPad Air 2022. The Apple insider also said that Apple plans to launch at least one new Mac. However, it is unclear whether it will make an appearance during Apple’s March event.

If Apple organizes an event on March 8 to unveil the new iPhone SE and iPad Air, it is strange for several reasons. First of all, it’s about modest upgrades. Both devices look exactly the same as the previous generation. The main improvements are a more powerful chip and 5G support. No innovations to announce with much fanfare.

Press release

Moreover, Apple never before announced the popular iPhone SE during an event. The first generation SE with 4-inch screen was announced in 2016 via a press release. With its successor – which became a size bigger with 4.7-inch – ditto. It would be strange if Apple suddenly chooses to put the SE in Cupertino in the spotlight with this relatively boring update.

It is also questionable whether the iPhone SE will be ready in time for an announcement in March. According to display analyst Ross Young – who, like Gurman, has a very good reputation – the iPhone SE 2022 will be released in the second half of April or early May. In that case there is an unusually long time between the moment of announcement and appearance.

So there are many reasons to doubt an Apple event in March. But if it does happen, we’ll hear more soon. Typically, Apple sends out the event invite about one week in advance. That could be next Monday or Tuesday.
