Why Spider-Man isn’t on Disney+
It’s a curiosity: the current Spider-Man is part of the MCU, even fought alongside the Avengers against Thanos – and yet the movies starring Tom Holland are missing from Disney+. Just like all other Spider-Man movies. GIGA explains the reason and reveals which streaming services you can find Spider-Man on.
Spider-Man movies not found on Disney+
From Iron Man to Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has 27 films released in theaters between 2008 and the present. If you have enough time and are planning an MCU marathon, it’s best to stop by Disney+. With the streaming service, all films of the superhero saga are available at no extra charge – at least almost all.
Because the three recent Spider-Man films with Tom Holland in the role of the “friendly neighborhood spider” are missing, although they are part of the MCU and Disney acquired Marvel in 2009. The older Spider-Man films with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are also not found on Disney+.
Spider-Man film rights are owned by Sony
The reason for Disney+’s strange abstinence has four letters: Sony.
Before Marvel fell into a license to print money with the MCU, the comic book publisher was not doing well at all. What’s more, Marvel was doing so badly that it was forced to sell the movie rights to some of its most popular characters. This included Spider-Man, whose film rights are owned by Sony.
Which streaming service is right for you?
Spider-Man movies scattered across streaming platforms
While Sony and Marvel announced a collaboration in 2015 that brought Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to the MCU, it’s limited to cinema – not streaming services. If you want to watch Spider-Man at home, you have to do some Sisyphean work. Because the sympathetic superhero is wildly scattered on the big platforms:
- Spider-Man (with Tobey Maguire): Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Sky
- Spider-Man 2 (with Tobey Maguire): Amazon Prime Video, Sky
- Spider-Man 3 (with Tobey Maguire): Amazon Prime Video, Sky
- The Amazing Spider-Man (with Andrew Garfield): Amazon Prime Video, Sky
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (starring Andrew Garfield): Sky
- Spider-Man: Homecoming (with Tom Holland): Netflix, Sky
the Spider-Man fans currently have the best chances with Amazon Prime Video and Sky, but even there not all films are available for free for subscribers. So if you want to have all the Spider-Man films with Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland in your collection from the last 22 years, you have to dig into your pockets for better or worse – or wait until the streaming roulette has turned a little further .
