Where is the Apple M2 chip? According to this rumor it is coming’
The March Apple Event brought us many new products, but we missed new MacBooks with an M2 chip. When will they come? We won’t have to wait long – if the rumors are true.
Read on after the ad.
New MacBooks with M2 chip coming at the end of 2022
Apple will announce a MacBook Air and entry-level MacBook Pro in late 2022 with a brand-new M2 chip under the hood. That’s what ‘reliable sources’ tell 9To5Mac† We were hoping to see the M2 chip at Apple’s March event, but instead we got the M1 Ultra—the most powerful chip Apple has ever made—and the Mac Studio.
There have been rumors of a MacBook Air with a new design for months now. The laptop would come on the market in different colors and have white screen edges. Like the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, the new MacBook Air would have a notch. There are also rumors about a new entry-level version of the MacBook Pro with an M2 chip. This keeps the ‘old’ design.

It doesn’t stop here though. According to , the Mac mini also gets 9To5Mac an updated version with an M2 chip – and the iPad Pro will follow in 2023. That means that the M1 chapter will be closed after two years at the end of 2022. There is a good chance that in 2023 we will see an M2 Pro, M2 Max and M2 Ultra. These will be used in several high-end Macs.
What is the difference between the M2 and the M1?
The launch of the M1 chip has changed the Mac landscape forever. It’s the first Apple Silicon chip for computers — Macs used to run on Intel chips. Apple has multiple versions of the M1: the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra. The Ultra can now only be found in the brand new Mac Studio. With a 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, and a staggering 114 billion transistors, it’s by far the most powerful chip ever from Apple — and arguably the most powerful chip today.

The regular M2 chip is – regardless of the name might suggest – less powerful than the M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra. Apple bases the M2 on the A15 chip, which we also know from the iPhone 13 series and the iPhone SE 2022. With 10 CPU cores, the M2 chip looks similar to the M1, but that is not quite the case. The GPU of the M2 is getting a major upgrade.
