When can I download iOS 15? This is when it’s your turn

Before everyone can get started with the new update, there are two hurdles to overcome. First, Apple will roll out the test version for developers. Then it is the turn of the public beta and only when it is completed, everyone can download iOS 15. This is the timeline of the iPhone update in 2021.

1. iOS 15 Developer Beta – Launching Now

It’s not nothing, such an iPhone update. All apps that you currently have on your phone have been made especially for iOS 14, the update that came out simultaneously with the iPhone 12 at the end of 2020.

Apple can’t just roll out a new iPhone version and expect everything to run smoothly. No, developers need time to get their apps ready for iOS 15 and that’s why they get the scoop. They can be the first to get started with the iPhone update of 2021.

Whether you should be jealous of this remains to be seen. It is a very rough test version of iOS 15 that can contain all kinds of bugs and problems. Are you a developer? Then don’t download iOS 15 on an iPhone that you need for daily use: it is a test version for a reason.

2. Public Trial – In July

After developers were able to download iOS 15, the test version is coming to the general public. During the announcement, Apple said the public beta — which is available to anyone to download, developer or not — will be released in July. Unfortunately, the company did not provide a specific release date.

We can of course make an estimate. The public beta of iOS 14 was released on July 9, 2020, and the test version of iOS 13 was released on June 24 a year earlier. If we have to make an estimate, then we think that the public beta of iOS 15 will appear in the first half of July.

Again: this is a test version. Of course it’s great fun to be one of the first to get started with all the new iPhone features, but a beta is meant to smooth out creases. The test version may therefore be unstable.

3. Download iOS 15 – In September

Once all the dots have been put on the i, Apple will definitely release the iPhone update. We expect everyone to be able to download iOS 15 in September. All Apple phones that now run iOS 14 can also handle the successor. That’s neat, because it means even the six-year-old iPhone 6S can still run the latest iOS version.

Apple always releases the final version of an iOS update simultaneously with this year’s new iPhones. We expect Apple to announce four new phones this year: iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The presentation will probably take place in September. The iPhone 12 was announced in October, but that was due to the consequences of the corona crisis on the production schedule. According to rumors, Apple has now adapted to the situation and the new phones ‘just’ come in September.
