WhatsApp will soon no longer work on your old smartphones
In 2022, WhatsApp will say goodbye to all devices with a version older than Jelly Bean (v4.1). The application had already said “bye bye” to devices running Honeycomb (v3) last year and to those running Gingerbread (v2.3) the year before. It is therefore the owners of smartphones and tablets under Ice Cream Sandwich (v4) who are impacted this year from May 31.
It must be said that the latest version of this OS dates from March 2012! And in the world of apps, 10 years is an eternity… This purge will push its batch of iconic devices such as the Sony Xperia M, the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 or the LG Optimus L5 II towards the release.
If you have a boomer in your entourage who explains to you that his WhatsApp no longer works, you will have to explain to him that it is time to change the device (and tell him that it is Macron’s fault too). If you are looking for a low-cost smartphone to replace it, you can always consult our Good Deals section.
On the iPhone side, the SE, 5, 5C, 6S and 6S Plus models are sidelined. In short, you will need at least version 10 of iOS to continue to receive and send your messages. Attention from October 22, 2022, WhatsApp under iOS 10 will in turn be pushed towards the exit…
Change OS?
For the most hackers among you, there is also the hope of switching to the alternative LineageOS Android system. By going through this solution, you can upgrade your Android system to more recent versions than those offered by the manufacturer. However, your device must be on the list of smartphones supported.
While waiting for a change of OS or smartphone, remember to save the conversations you want to keep or they will be lost forever. To do this, press the three small dots at the top right, then Settings, Discussions and Backup chat.
