WhatsApp seems to continuously use smartphone microphones and blames Google

Multiple users report that WhatsApp continuously uses the microphone on their Android smartphone. Even if the app is closed. WhatsApp is working on a solution, but indicates that the problem is not with them.

Microphone is always on

Several users indicate that WhatsApp is constantly using their microphone. They see that the ‘indicator dot’ – which shows that the microphone or camera on your smartphone is being used – remains on continuously. They further report that this problem is caused by WhatsApp. If they use that app and give permission to use the microphone, the light will stay on. This also happens if they have closed WhatsApp.

A user on Twitter is further elaborated here. He went to the privacy dashboard on his Google Pixel 7 Pro and found nine reports about WhatsApp. It stated that this app allows the microphone permission to work in the background even when the app itself is not running. In addition, several users report that they experience the same problem. It is mainly Pixel and Samsung users who report the bug.

Solution from WhatsApp: problem lies with Google

WhatsApp has in a tweet responded to the problem. In this, the company indicates that the problem is not with the app, but that the Android operating system is the cause of the problem. WhatsApp therefore blames Google and Android entirely: “We believe this is a bug in Android that misattributes information in the privacy dashboard and we have approached Google to investigate and fix this.”

WhatsApp indicates that users have and keep control over the microphone settings. If the app is allowed to use the microphone, it will really only use it when sending voice messages and video or calling calls.
