what will the iPhone of 2021 be called?

It is clear that Apple will announce a new iPhone in September, but what will it be called? Both iPhone 13 and iPhone 12S pass by in the corridors, so let’s pit the contenders against each other.

Read on after the ad.

The big question: iPhone 13, or iPhone 12S?

After the iPhone 11 (from 2019), the iPhone 12 (2020) appeared, so the iPhone 13 will be released this fall. However? Although this sounds logical, it is far from certain that the new device will actually be called that.

Several sources claim that Apple prefers to refrain from this number for various reasons. Instead, the new device would be given a different name, such as iPhone 12S. Now, of course, we can’t look into the future, but speculating about the pros and cons of both names never hurts. Are you reading along?

1. Unlucky Number

Starting with a buyer: 13 is an unlucky number. Some skyscrapers don’t have a 13th floor, people are extra careful on Friday the 13th and people with triskaidekaphobia have long since given up reading this article. They are terrified when they see these numbers.

It should be clear: 13 may not be the first number a brand wants to commit to. This applies even more heavily to a party like Apple, which has an incredibly well-behaved image.

2. 13 skipping is normal

Speaking of which: tech companies often skip a ‘less’ figure. Look, for example, at the Chinese OnePlus, which very deliberately never released a OnePlus 4 phone. Instead, the OnePlus 3 was succeeded by the OnePlus 5. Why? Because 4 is an unlucky number in home market China, just like 13 here.

3. Gap year for the iPhone

Apple never makes big leaps when it comes to iOS versions. iOS 14 came out last year, followed by version 14.1, 14.2, 14.3 and soon we will be able to download iOS 14.8. After all these intermediate steps have been taken, iOS 15 will roll out. That will probably happen later this year.

The moral of this example: only when the changes are this big, does Apple release a new version. In the past, the company also did this with smartphones. The iPhone X (2017) was not directly followed by the iPhone 11. In between came the iPhone XS (Max), because Apple could not justify the switch to 11.

Perhaps the company will do the same this year. After all, all rumors indicate that the iPhone 13 will be a nice improvement over the iPhone 12, but will not make any major changes.

Why it will be iPhone 13

Time to play devil’s advocate. Are there no reasons to think of why it will be ‘normal’ iPhone 13? Of course it is!

The most obvious is that Apple has released products with these numbers before. Just look at iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, the iPhone and iPad software versions that came out in 2019. Apple didn’t skip the unlucky number then, not even in the superstitious Western market.

There is again a caveat to be made here. Software is different from hardware. A phone feels much more personal than the software on it. After all, you know that the operating system is constantly changing. Anyone who buys a new iPhone can assume that her/his device will include at least five version updates.

A telephone does not do this of course: after years of use it still has the same name as when you took the device out of the packaging.

Do you want to win the iPhone of 2021?

In a month, all uncertainty will end. Apple is rumored to unveil the successor to the iPhone 12 in early or mid-September. Whether the device gets iPhone 13, 12S or another name: we will test it and will probably also give a copy away to one of our readers. Loves iPhoned So keep an eye out for the coming weeks!
