Billionaire Elon Musk has reinvented the car and wants to send tourists into space. But did you know that he is also responsible for an important iPhone 14 feature?

In exactly one week – on Wednesday, September 7 – Apple will present the new iPhone 14. Last week, Apple sent out the invitation. There you will see a night sky with stars that make up the Apple logo. And the theme is ‘Far out’.

There are indications that the iPhone 14 is getting a function that has something to do with space. And we’re pretty sure we already know what, because Apple is rumored to be adding a satellite communications feature to the iPhone 14 (Pro). The function makes it possible to call or text anywhere in an emergency – even if you are far from civilization.

Satellite communication thanks to SpaceX

The fact that Apple can add the function is partly thanks to Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The satellites of the space company and Globalstar have created a very good network in low Earth orbit, with which the iPhone will soon be able to communicate.

Last week, T-Mobile announced that it will partner with SpaceX to provide universal coverage. T-Mobile’s mobile network will be combined with SpaceX’s Starlink satellites. Tim Farrar — an expert in satellite communications — thinks T-Mobile is anticipating Apple’s big reveal on September 7.

Farrar previously suggested that Apple is partnering with Globalstar to offer free satellite messaging. This means calling and texting. In the future, it may even be possible to send voice calls or photos via satellites, but this will require additional investment, according to Farrar.

iPhone 14 launch

We’ll know more next week. On Wednesday, September 7 at 7:00 PM (Dutch time), Apple will announce the new iPhone 14 series. It probably concerns four iPhone 14 models. In addition, Apple is announcing new Apple Watches and we may also hear about a new iPad.
