We explain the most important abbreviations to you

“Hodling” is just the beginning – a language of its own has prevailed in the blockchain world. Especially popular with hodlers and crypto enthusiasts: shortcuts. Whether for technical designations or for good advice, a separate written language has developed in the forums.

Who hangs around in crypto forums will often come across sentences like this: “Don’t let FUD give you FOMO or you’ll end up REKT” What do these abbreviations mean? We give an overview.

BTD or BTFD = buy the dip or buy the fucking dip

In other words, invest when prices are low. If prices fall in the short term, many investment strategists see a good opportunity to enter a project or to increase their positions. Anyone who recommends BTD is convinced that things will go up again – the only question left is when.

DYOR = do your own research

That means: Do your homework yourself and don’t blindly rely on the crowd or individual (supposed) experts when it comes to investing your money or time.

HODL = hold on for dear life

In other words, long-term investments will be worthwhile. A particularly popular piece of advice when it comes to crypto assets’ high volatility or prices going down.

This old wisdom for the crypto world was created in a forum. What was actually meant was the advice “hold”, i.e. to hold the coin. The other forum members took the typo with humor and made it one of the most famous crypto memes.

FOMO = fear of missing out

That means: Whether you really miss something here or it just feels like it is uncertain. This psychological phenomenon can occur in any area of life, especially when we compare ourselves to others.

This can have expensive consequences for crypto investments, as FOMO often occurs when prices are rising. If everyone is investing in the next big thing, I want to be there too. However, hasty investment decisions involving a lot of FOMO can result in us buying an asset at a very high price – and ultimately losing the stake.

FUD = fear, uncertainty and doubt

That means listening to fear, uncertainty and doubt when making investment decisions. What sounds like a warning about supposed or actual risks of a project is often used differently. Anyone who acts from FUD does not act rationally and above all: does not hodle.

REKT = wrecked

In other words: Here someone loses a lot of money in a trade. If an investment has not been worthwhile or has resulted in a loss, it is often referred to as “destroyed” (English wrecked). However, REKT can also be a warning of a risky position.

SFYL = sorry for your loss

That means I feel for you. Even if there are high returns on the crypto market, investors always take a big risk. SFYL can be a gesture of solidarity or the beginning of an attempt to convince the other person of a new project.

TLT = think long term

In other words, some investments only pay off later. As with the stock market, periods of low prices can be sat out, which is why many crypto enthusiasts recommend hodling.

LAMBO = Lamborghini (yes, the car)

In other words: someone has made so much money with crypto trading that it is enough to buy an expensive sports car. “When Lambo?” asks who is completely gripped by the initial euphoria about the potential of a coin or project – or who brings a pinch of humor with them.
