Watch out for modified versions of WhatsApp! They may contain malware

The threat was discovered by scientists from Kaspersky, specifically in version 16.80.0. After installation, the Trojan steals device identifiers and registers it on its server. From there, it will download other malicious software that can infect your device with xHelper malware, read your SMS messages, display ads to you, or register you to subscribe to services without your knowledge.

Watch out for customized versions of popular applications

The only guaranteed way to avoid being infected with malware in this case is to not use modified versions of applications. In addition, using your favorite service with useful features may seem tempting, but it carries the risk of data or money theft.
