Warning to crypto owners! – Devices
There is a warning going around for crypto owners to beware of massive scams.
One of the largest crypto platforms in the world has issued a warning. Binance has warned investors about a “mass SMS phishing scam”. The scammers send text messages to crypto users. This is to notify them of a withdrawal request from an unknown IP address that they may wish to cancel.
Warning crypto owners
So there is a massive phishing scam targeting crypto investors. So be careful with text messages you receive. You should always do this with messages from unknown senders. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) tweeted last week: There is a massive SMS phishing scam with a link to cancel withdrawals. It leads to a phishing website to collect your credentials.
It is about a so-called withdrawal request. The scammers breed fear by saying that a withdrawal is imminent from an unknown IP address. So someone is withdrawing cryptos from your account. To prevent that you have to follow a link. The message then asks investors to click a link to cancel the withdrawal request. However, the link leads to a phishing website that will attempt to steal investor credentials.
Don’t fall for it
The CEO of Binance further advised that users should always go directly to the Binance website via bookmark or type the URL in the browser. He emphasized that you should never click on a link via a text message. By the way, Binance is not the only victim. In August last year, the Nasdaq-listed cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase similarly warned of a phishing scam targeting Coinbase users.
So, scams are common. In fact, last year was a peak year for scammers. Never before has so much money been raked in from criminal activities with digital money. It is estimated that this amounts to billions of euros.
