VW reveals the first details – but the most important question remains open
With the ID. Buzz brings VW the absolute classic for camping trips and craft fleets into the electric age. The first details about the electric Bulli have now been announced a few weeks before the official launch: They show that VW is doing a lot right – but we are still missing one crucial feature.
With the electric Bulli, Volkswagen is returning to its old strengths
It is clear that he is coming. We now also know when VW will officially present the E-Bulli to the public: March 9 is set. Now the Wolfsburg have revealed the first details. They show: the classic Bulli also reflects on its strengths as an electric version.
This includes the amount of space that families and professional drivers appreciate, because the ID. Buzz will initially appear in two versions: a passenger car and a cargo edition. With 1,121 liters, the former has almost the same storage space as the current combustion engine version T6.1 with five occupants. Without rear seats, the cargo version only manages around 3,900 liters – a significant minus compared to the diesel. According to VW you have it Optimized overall space and comes with smaller external dimensions. Future versions should get even more out of it with a larger wheelbase.
The ID Buzz comes with one powerful battery: The 77 kWh net capacity corresponds to the most powerful version of the ID.4, which has a maximum range of 520 km. True to the original, the 150 kW electric motor is located on the rear axle. The ID. Buzz provided right from the start: Plug&Charge – for automatic recognition of the E-Bullis at many charging stations – as well as bidirectional charging should be included.
Decisive for the electric car: VW is still silent about the range
Whether the ID. Buzz can shine again in his former parade disciplines, above all the information that has not yet been communicated will decide. Volkswagen writes: “Official range values are not yet available” (Source: Volkswagen). The return of the family camper is likely to depend on the number of kilometers, at least as long as the charging expansion cannot keep up with the filling station infrastructure.
Is the time for an electric car already ripe? Here you can find out:
Previous reports assume a range of between 400 and 600 km, the upper middle field in the range comparison is therefore likely. However, if potential buyers end up with a load at the lower end of this range, they could decide how well the Elektrobulli performs on vacation trips with the family compared to its predecessors.
