It is well known that electric cars have a shorter range in winter than in summer. A study using the example of the VW ID 3 shows how much that can actually make a difference. The result: quite a lot.

Using a VW ID 3, the University of Wismar tested over a year how the consumption of an electric car changes. It is already known that consumption is significantly higher in winter – which also reduces the range.

Diesel and e-car manage 30,000 kilometers

Within the twelve months, the VW ID 3 managed a mileage of 30,594 kilometers, as ecomento.de reported. The comparison vehicle, a Golf Diesel TDI, covered 31,916 kilometers in the same period.

In addition, the different seasons had almost no effect on diesel consumption – but that doesn’t mean that the Golf would do better in terms of consumption.

On the contrary: the consumption of the Golf in summer was 49.7 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers, in winter it was 52.2 kilowatt hours.

Winter consumption is 28 percent higher than in summer

With the ID 3, on the other hand, consumption in summer was just 13.3 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers. In winter it was 17 kilowatt hours – but that was 28 percent more than summer consumption.

According to the calculations, this also affects the range. The 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack enables a range of 404.8 kilometers in summer. In winter, the ID 3 only covered 317 kilometers on one battery charge.

The reason for this is the increased use of heating technology, as stated in a report in the newspaper Auto Verkehr. In addition to the interior, the battery must also be warmed up in order to reach the optimum temperature for operation.

With a combustion engine, the engine itself generates waste heat and thus contributes to the heating output.

VW ID 3 “clear winner” in comparison with the Golf

Ansgar Wego from the University of Wismar sees the VW ID 3 “as the clear winner” in the comparison with the combustion engine. According to Wego, electric vehicles performed significantly better when it came to efficiency.

And that is also reflected in the wallet. Because with a diesel price of 1.85 euros and a kilowatt hour price of 45 cents, you would save 831 euros with the ID 3.
