Volvo electric trucks drive up to 12 hours – with just one charging stop

Car manufacturer Volvo has presented an electric truck that can drive for up to twelve hours with just one charging stop. The goal: to reduce emissions in the logistics sector. The backgrounds.

The mobility revolution is progressing. The proportion of electric vehicles in city traffic has been increasing for several years. At the same time, transport companies are replacing old diesel buses with electric models. But electrification is stagnating in one sector: the logistics industry. Because there are even more and more classic trucks rolling on the streets.

Although e-trucks are already being tested, a breakthrough still seems a long way off. But that could change soon, at least at Volvo Trucks. Because the Swedish company is currently testing an electric truck for heavy goods traffic. In the future, the manufacturer’s first models could roll over Sweden’s roads. And with very few loading breaks.

Volvo brings electric trucks with a capacity of up to 74 tons

The new model can transport up to 74 tons. The battery capacity is sufficient to operate the electric truck for twelve hours with just one charging stop. The Volvo FH Electric complements the company’s model range with a heavy-duty model. Volvo also offers six other fully electric models.

What is special is that the FH Electric is prepared for high-capacity transport (HCT). These transports enable goods to be delivered even more efficiently and usually consist of two 32-metre trailers and a tractor unit. The electric truck is charged with two fast charging cables (180 kilowatts).

Only one charging break within a 12-hour shift

A route between Gothenburg and Borås is also planned. This route is 70 kilometers long and can be used by trucks several times a day. During a shift, the vehicle only needs a charging break. This break takes place during the contractually agreed working hours. There is therefore no interruption to operations at any time.

Meanwhile, electric trucks seem to have great potential. Because many countries have already expressed interest in the HCT models, including Finland, where a truck combination can weigh up to 76 tons. Volvo Trucks has sold around 5,000 electric trucks in 40 countries since 2019. By 2030, half of the vehicles sold should be electric.
